Cupcakes
"CUPCAKES" was the name of the game
Those four girls were certainly to blame!
As they approached me, there were giggles in the air.
I STOPPED, looked at them, yelled "Get out of my Hair!"
They wanted to give me a topic for the week.
They wanted a P O E M… my brain started to SQUEAK!
Although I didn’t agree in front of those four,
Words to the poem stood ready at the door.
Just like that! They assembled.
With no effort they resembled…
A tiny marching band all in a row.
They showed they were ready… from head…to…toe.
All that was needed was a way to escape,
But they were being stopped by a BIG PIECE OF TAPE!
The tape was Grandpa, not being very still.
Once he’d sit down, he would then have the will…
To write down the words all ready to go.
He’ll have to write fast, they’ll not be marching out slow!
The morning was there.
He sat down on a chair,
He sat down on a chair,
Got paper and pen,
You’ll be surprised that then,
You’ll be surprised that then,
Grandpa let loose the band. He opened the gate.
The words then marched out at a very speedy rate…
Cupcakes are the REAL DEAL;
YUMMY food you don’t have to peel!
Thinking of them can be very dreamy,
Especially when the cakes are so creamy.
The batter was mixed with delicate care.
It was a strawberry blend so pretty, you’d stare…
At how smoothly it poured into each little hole.
It tasted so good, you’d lick from the bowl!
Into the oven, they were placed with great care.
I watched them cook. I stood… right… there.
The timer was on, the minutes went by.
I got worried, I wondered, I wanted to try…
To open the door and see how they were,
But Mom was watching, she said she was sure…
My cupcakes were good, and they would not burn.
That I need to be patient as the second hand turned.
The "done sound" rang, I opened the door
I pulled them out carefully; they didn’t land on the floor.
On the cooling rack in a row they all stood.
Waiting quietly by, I wondered how I would…
Be able to wait, till they had cooled down
When my mind captured a thought that made me frown.
Now getting ready to finish my tasty cup cakes,
… I had not made any frosting for heaven sakes!
I was amazed that my speed and all of my haste
Had caused me to forget this most important of paste.
I had planned a good plan, I had gathered the stuff.
I proceeded with care, the going was rough.
And now at the end, I will readily admit
That I was in such a hurry, I had not paid attention one bit…
To my mom’s sage advice, to write down what I’d do
To make sure I think my task through… and… through.
As I contemplated my problem sitting there in the chair
I saw our dog, which was standing right there…
Wagging her tail, a big smile on her face,
She wanted a cupcake, she wanted a taste!
I stopped feeling so sad and started feeling some glad.
I still had the chance to "Right" by big "Bad".
I gazed at the cupcakes, dreamed how they would look
If I topped them with frosting like a picture in the book.
My Mom helped me find what seemed just right
I started my work, I used all my might.
In the bowl I added all that was needed AND THEN
I stirred as fast as I could AND WHEN…
My arms just couldn’t, wouldn’t stir any more
My mother was standing, watching from the door.
She smiled and said "You’re doing so well!"
She came over to help me. My arms nearly fell…
From my shoulders as I sat on the floor;
I wondered if cupcakes could be found in the store.
Mom whipped up the frosting in no time at all.
She pulled up a chair, said "Be careful don’t fall"
She showed me how to frost each cupcake with care.
I did it so well, though some got in my hair.
Just like that, they were assembled
In their glory, they resembled…
A tiny marching band all in a row;
Each cupcake with its very own glow!
I stared in amazement, I started to beam,
Because Mom and I are such a great team!
