Topic #43 The Great Invention

The Great Invention

I found a screw on the ground…

What did it hold?

Maybe something new…

No…probably something old.

Looking at the threads, it could hold anything very tight.

If screwed in just the right place, would hold stuff just right.

It would not wiggle, or flop around.

It would stay there all year and not fall on the ground.

I started wondering what I could do with my screw.

It had possibilities… That I KNEW!

I’ll keep it hidden

Right here in my pocket

I’ll make something big…

My invention will

be

a

ROCKET!

Red, White and Blue, the colors they’ll be

When I have it finished, it will be as tall as a TREE!

My Dad’s ladder will make a good GANTRY.

I will need some snacks, which are up in the pantry.

The cardboard in the garage and tape in the shed

Will make a rocked my friends will certainly dread.

They will all stand away when I launch it in the sky.

They will wonder out loud saying… “Are you a spy?”

I found some mud that would be needed for sure,

And when it takes off, all we’ll see is a blur.

The flash will surprise them. They will GULP WITH FEAR!

They will hear a BIG ROAR and will be glad they’re not near.

I was late getting home that day from school.

My plans were planned… I saw Jeremy at the pool…

So I changed my clothes and headed for some fun.

We had a great time until the setting of the sun.

After dinner I asked mom if she’d seen my screw.

She said “Of course. It was in your pants, so I threw

It away with the rock… but the dime…

It’s right here AND CLEAN YOUR POCKETS OUT NEXT TIME!”

Hmmmm…

Some of the biggest plans in your life

May never go through

So…

Be safe with your ideas…

ALWAYS HIDE THEM INSIDE YOUR SHOE!

Topic #42 Three Friends

A poem that just happened when Anakha-Marie posted this picture of her and her friends.

Three Friends

Thirty toes, all in their spaces.

Looking to explore many new places.

Seven wanted to go high and ten wanted to …go…low.

The rest did not even care…they just wanted to…move…very…slow.

They asked six feet who were standing nearby

Who then responded “We all would like to FLY!”

The toes gathered together and had a little talk.

They chose a spokes-toe who exclaimed “We would rather WALK!!”

The ankles then engaged, but they were only two

And said “We were very worried…the last time that we flew”.

The knees heard what was happening way down there below.

And offered the sage advice “Don’t ask us, because WE DON’T KNOW”.

Two elbows near the top suggested “Just go ask a head”.

Everyone then worried, and felt a lot of dread.

“You all know what happens way up there…”

“A head is crazy, and is covered with a bunch of HAIR!”

“The head cannot make decisions without consulting with the brain.

Then suddenly the mouth exclaimed

“Let’s all go somewhere together.. and let’s get there on a TRAIN!”

“The train is fun and you will feel like you can FLY!”

“The train will travel low and it can also travel high!”

“The toes who like “slow” can sit and watch all day”.

The entire group of friends just stood there in dismay.

The spokes-toe raised up and said “Let’s Go Make It HAPPEN!”.

The hands were so happy, they jumped and started clap’in.

So…

Great things happened when they all acted as a team…

They formed stronger friendships…

And it turned out better than a DREAM!

Topic #40 The Man From Zanzabar

I am the blue-bearded man from Zanzabar.
I ride a donkey and don't have a car.

My wife wears pink and likes to rollerblade.
She zooms really fast and is never afraid.

My donkey moves   r e a l.... s l o w  and her name is Daisy.
People see her plod... and then call me lazy!

But Daisy and I have been friends for many a year.
We've raced many races, and we saw people cheer!

It did not matter that we were not very fast.
We started with great hopes, but always finished last.

When we crossed the finish line, it felt so very good
Because we stayed in the race... just like we should.

So when you climb out of bed and start YOUR race each day
Just remember Daisy and I...
We'll cheer you on
and in your race
YOU
WILL
STAY!

Topic # 39 TURTLE

Ferdinand the turtle
Was as wise as could be found.
His only problem while here on earth
Was he could not get off the ground!

He dreamed of flying high in the air
And going fast-as-a-bird in the sky.
While he watched birds soar high above
Ferdinand often wondered... WHY?

Pondering this thought, he stared up in the air.
Much to his surprise, there were no birds up there.
It was raining very hard that day
So none of them could come out and play.

Ferdinand thought "Rain is Fun!" and so he started to run
And scampered along his way.
He was thrilled to move his turtle legs
And is happy to this very day.

Topic #38 WEED SEEDS

WEED SEEDS
Why do they grow?
I asked my dog.
She...does...not...know.

I looked at my sister
In search of the truth.
She gave a big sigh
And glanced at the roof.

What's up there?
I wondered and asked.
She said "Have no clue...
Let's get to our task".

We kept pulling them out
One...at...a...time.
I pulled out a big one.
It came with a dime!

I was very excited
to find some more.
So I pulled very quickly
And saw dad at the door.

He said "How's it going?"
And "Look! You're almost done!"
I never knew pulling weeds
Could be so...much...fun.

Topic #37 On The Move

They were all standing; all in a row.
Toben looked around and said "Let's go, Go, GO!!!"

So off they went to have some fun.
Gabriel yelled "I CAN'T RUN!"

Olea picked him up and strapped him down.
Sophie looked over and danced like a clown!

A FLASH STREAKED BY! It was Leela-LaRue.
Please don't doubt me... because IT IS TRUE!

Kailani had her skates on. She went really FAST.
Anakha-Marie declared "We're having a BLAST!"

So, over the hill they all went that day.
They are always on the move...
They...
                           NEVER...
                                                   STAY.

Topic #36 The Life Of Worms

Today is so sunny...
It has become so terribly funny.
And my nose... it is very, very runny.

The worms are hiding from the light.
They stay down below in horrible fright
And hold the door shut with all their might!

WHY, you ask?
They are afraid of the task

The Fisherman has in store.
If they dare go out the door

He will snatch them up one-by-one
And place them on hooks until his fishing is done!

So... stay inside my little friends...
Or you will come to very bad ends.

Please help my dirt stay soft and squishy.
I'll not ask you out. I'll not be pushy.

Please!... just relax and have some fun
While I go out and play in the sun!

Topic #33 Water Slide

I raced down the water slide
And splashed into the pool!

But when I landed upside down
It...was...not...very...cool.

Because water went up into my nose...
And I AM SURE IT SOAKED BY BRAIN.

The Lifeguard said it would be very good
If I would carefully train

My nose to keep the water out
It would help me every day.

So now I place a big clothes pin on my nose
Every time I go to the pool and play!

Topic #32 Worm On The Sidewalk

Little worm, don't wiggle away!
I want to help you through the day.

I know it rained hard all...last...night,
But if you try with all your might

We can get you on your way back home
And when you arrive, you won't be alone.

Mom and Dad will see you there.
Your little brothers will stop and stare

At how brave you were to escape the sun!
They'll want to play and have some fun.

So...

Eat some yummy dirt and get some rest.
We are Pals...We are the best!

Topic #30 The Fork In The Road

It happened again, just like before.
I was perplexed...and headed for the door.

I walked down the path that led to the road,
Then heard a scary noise...and decided it was a toad.

The road came into view and I started to look
I had never seen one, nor read of one in a book.

My Mother had been very clear when speaking with my Dad.
She said "...FORK, IN, THE, ROAD.." and I was very glad

That she wasn't talking to me. She was BEING VERY BLUNT...
SO I WAS ON A SEARCH... I WAS ON A HUNT

For a FORK IN THE ROAD; I am sure it is there.
Perhaps I will see it, and then I will stare

And wonder how I've missed it, sitting on the ground
In the middle of the road, waiting to be found.

pause

I never found that fork while searching on that day.
I came to where the road divides, and really wanted to play.

So I went up the hill and get my friend to run
To the playground, so we could have some fun.

I think sometimes, and I am very glad I did not go down the hill,
For evil lurked down there...once there was a shrill.

It was only a baby screech owl, but I am VERY SURE
If I had gone that way, I would have caught something
           FOR WHICH
                                   THERE
                                                   IS
                                                           NO
                                                                      CURE.

TOPIC #29 Ice Cream In The Summer

Ice Cream In The Summer

Ice cream in the summer is supposed
To be a treat.
Then why does it melt, run down and
Drip all over my feet?

Our dog down there likes to lick it up…
She licks RIGHT…OFF…THE…FLOOR!
My Mom said “You are such a mess!”
So I ran right out the DOOR!

I found myself outside
Standing next to our tree.
I heard a buzzing sound…
OH NO!!! Here comes a bee!

I dashed over to the swing set
And sat there on the swing
And tried to lick my ice cream
Which had become a sloppy thing…

With more on my hand than in the cone
Which was almost empty and looking so alone.
I licked off as much of the mess as I could.
I made a plan and decided I would…

Wash off with the hose; get it all clean.
I’d do so well, no mess would be seen.
So I ran to the hose, turned the water FULL ON,
Washed all the ice cream, then watered the lawn.

I felt the cool water as it splashed on my feet.
I sprayed it all over, it felt so very neat
To point the hose straight up in the air.
It flew high in the sky, then rained in my hair.

I don’t really know how long
I was out there to play
But it sure was refreshing…
On that hot summer day.

TOPIC #28 SHADOW JUMPER

AGENT:
SHADOW JUMPER
COORDINATES: LATITUDE 37.100778 LONGITUDE -113.578211
LOCATION: St. George, Utah, USA
WEATHER: FULL SUN                            TEMPERATURE: 104 F

We went to the desert to see all my cousins.
I have a LOT of them; I am sure there are dozens!

We played and laughed and had lots of fun.
But our parents kept saying “STAY OUT OF THE SUN!!”

How to do that we did not know…the sun was very bright,
But if we were in the shade, it seemed as though we might

Be able to not get caught by “OVER 100 degrees
So we stayed in the dark, right under the trees…

And went from one to the other, running while in the light.
We jumped from shadow to shadow sprinting with all our might.

We became SHADOW JUMPERS, that’s what we were!
We were SO FAST… all you could see was a blur.

We went on secret missions; agents doing good;
Each one of us with a purpose, knowing that we would

Save someone in need, help someone in destress.
Pulling people out of their GREAT…BIG…MESS.

We had signals to talk without making a sound,
And found treasures that needed to be found.

We stayed out of the sun for sure that day,
And had a great time… and I must say…

That becoming a SHADOW JUMPER with my cousins was neat…
We banded together
To
Escape
The
Heat.

TOPIC #27 My Closest Friends

My Closest Friends

I have three friends.
We have lots of fun.
Sometimes we climb.
Sometimes we run.

We all get together
When no one’s around
We’ll play on the swing,
Or we’ll dig in the ground.

Sometimes we all look
Way up in the sky.
Their names? You ask?
Why, they are
Me,
Myself
And
I

TOPIC #26 A Bug's Life

A Bug’s Life

This bug’s life Is so full of strife It does not know which way to go.
It starts off quickly running to the right then heads the other way…real…s l o w.
I feel so sorry for her; she seems so very frail.
She changes her mind so much and never seems to stay on her trail.
The same thing happened to me just the other day.
I was all ready,
all set,
all ready to go;
My day was planned. I was ready to play
I was passing the kitchen.
I was headed for the door
My Mother saw me, I heard her say
NO going outside until your chores are DONE!”
When you’ve also made your bed, you can go have some FUN”.
I STOPPED in my tracks… the door was so near.
I wanted to leave, but her message was clear.
So, like the bug…
I turned right around.
Did my chores really fast.
I suppose I am better off…
Than the bug on the ground.

TOPIC #25 My Dead Dog Fred

My Dead Dog Fred

Once there was a dog
Who acted just like a FROG!
He had four feet which jumped up and jumped down.
I finally told him “STOP IT!!!”
He gave me such a big FROWN.
His name is Fred and he follows me around each day.
He likes to sleep and he likes to eat.
But most of all… he loves to play.
                                   I saw him once.
He was laying on my bed.
He was not moving at all…
I thought he was DEAD!
I ran to tell Mom.
She said “Do not fear…
He will wake up soon
And then you will cheer”.
So I went back to my room
And carefully shut the door
Walked to just…the…right…place
And plopped down on the floor.
I hoped Mom was right…
And Fred would soon awake…
But if he was dead…
I’d have to tell Jake!
We would plan a big meeting.
Fred’s life was so fleeting.
We play music in the air
And comfort those that will be there.
Then, after all the tears have been shed
We’ll dig a big hole, and then we’ll bury…old…Fred.
I will write his name on a rock
And will place it just so.
It will mark the spot
                                  "Fred…lays…quietly…below".
Just then I looked up
And saw there was Fred.
His eyes wide open
Looking down at me from the bed.
My heart gave a big cheer!
                                    I was jumping for joy!!
                                    My Fred was alive!!!
                                    I’m the luckiest boy!!!!

TOPIC #24 Eating Dirt

Eating Dirt

I ate some dirt the other day
And it...did…not…taste…very…good.
I should have listened to my Mom
Like I know I always should.

Pause

My brother said it would be very tasty,
And he said I would be very glad,
And that when I swallowed it all,
He would surely never…ever…tell Dad.

Pause

So…I scooped up some up and shoved it down.
It stopped on its way…sure made me frown.
My mouth was still full of DIRT GRIT and DIRT GRIME,
So I’ll make sure I have water

Pause

When I eat...dirt…next…time.

TOPIC #23 Microscopic Topic

Microscopic Topic

I have a poem topic, but it’s very, very small.
It is so tiny; you can almost not see it at all”

It came into my brain in one tiny spirt.
It was so small; it was barely a squirt…

Of an idea; hardly met the needs of a topic.
I was embarrassed to share; it was so very microscopic!

But my mom said ‘it did not matter the size
And I should write it and I would see the prize

My topic would be to all who would read…
It may possibly fill something they need.

The verses could bring a great deal of joy
Even if the reader turned out to be a BOY”.

So I sat down in the chair and wrote the poem-topic down.
When it was finished, all I did was frown!

I walked over to the waste basket to throw it away…
When my mother entered the room and said a loud HAY!

She pulled out the topic, sat down and then cried.
The words she said made my eyes go WIDE!

“These are the most wonderful thoughts you could ever write.
You should keep them close and hold them tight”.

So…I am much older now, and have written much more.
I’ll share them with my kids…
If…
THEY DON’T RUN OUT
THE
DOOR!
