TOPIC #27 My Closest Friends

My Closest Friends

I have three friends.
We have lots of fun.
Sometimes we climb.
Sometimes we run.

We all get together
When no one’s around
We’ll play on the swing,
Or we’ll dig in the ground.

Sometimes we all look
Way up in the sky.
Their names? You ask?
Why, they are
Me,
Myself
And
I

TOPIC #26 A Bug's Life

A Bug’s Life

This bug’s life Is so full of strife It does not know which way to go.
It starts off quickly running to the right then heads the other way…real…s l o w.
I feel so sorry for her; she seems so very frail.
She changes her mind so much and never seems to stay on her trail.
The same thing happened to me just the other day.
I was all ready,
all set,
all ready to go;
My day was planned. I was ready to play
I was passing the kitchen.
I was headed for the door
My Mother saw me, I heard her say
NO going outside until your chores are DONE!”
When you’ve also made your bed, you can go have some FUN”.
I STOPPED in my tracks… the door was so near.
I wanted to leave, but her message was clear.
So, like the bug…
I turned right around.
Did my chores really fast.
I suppose I am better off…
Than the bug on the ground.

TOPIC #25 My Dead Dog Fred

My Dead Dog Fred

Once there was a dog
Who acted just like a FROG!
He had four feet which jumped up and jumped down.
I finally told him “STOP IT!!!”
He gave me such a big FROWN.
His name is Fred and he follows me around each day.
He likes to sleep and he likes to eat.
But most of all… he loves to play.
                                   I saw him once.
He was laying on my bed.
He was not moving at all…
I thought he was DEAD!
I ran to tell Mom.
She said “Do not fear…
He will wake up soon
And then you will cheer”.
So I went back to my room
And carefully shut the door
Walked to just…the…right…place
And plopped down on the floor.
I hoped Mom was right…
And Fred would soon awake…
But if he was dead…
I’d have to tell Jake!
We would plan a big meeting.
Fred’s life was so fleeting.
We play music in the air
And comfort those that will be there.
Then, after all the tears have been shed
We’ll dig a big hole, and then we’ll bury…old…Fred.
I will write his name on a rock
And will place it just so.
It will mark the spot
                                  "Fred…lays…quietly…below".
Just then I looked up
And saw there was Fred.
His eyes wide open
Looking down at me from the bed.
My heart gave a big cheer!
                                    I was jumping for joy!!
                                    My Fred was alive!!!
                                    I’m the luckiest boy!!!!

TOPIC #24 Eating Dirt

Eating Dirt

I ate some dirt the other day
And it...did…not…taste…very…good.
I should have listened to my Mom
Like I know I always should.

Pause

My brother said it would be very tasty,
And he said I would be very glad,
And that when I swallowed it all,
He would surely never…ever…tell Dad.

Pause

So…I scooped up some up and shoved it down.
It stopped on its way…sure made me frown.
My mouth was still full of DIRT GRIT and DIRT GRIME,
So I’ll make sure I have water

Pause

When I eat...dirt…next…time.

TOPIC #23 Microscopic Topic

Microscopic Topic

I have a poem topic, but it’s very, very small.
It is so tiny; you can almost not see it at all”

It came into my brain in one tiny spirt.
It was so small; it was barely a squirt…

Of an idea; hardly met the needs of a topic.
I was embarrassed to share; it was so very microscopic!

But my mom said ‘it did not matter the size
And I should write it and I would see the prize

My topic would be to all who would read…
It may possibly fill something they need.

The verses could bring a great deal of joy
Even if the reader turned out to be a BOY”.

So I sat down in the chair and wrote the poem-topic down.
When it was finished, all I did was frown!

I walked over to the waste basket to throw it away…
When my mother entered the room and said a loud HAY!

She pulled out the topic, sat down and then cried.
The words she said made my eyes go WIDE!

“These are the most wonderful thoughts you could ever write.
You should keep them close and hold them tight”.

So…I am much older now, and have written much more.
I’ll share them with my kids…
If…
THEY DON’T RUN OUT
THE
DOOR!

TOPIC #20 MUSTACHE

MUSTACHE

NOUN; THE UNSHAVED HAIR ON THE UPPER LIP.
I WONDER WHAT IT DOES WHEN YOU TRY TO SIP…

SOME YUMMY SOUP THAT MOM ALWAYS SHARES.
WOULD THE VEGETABLES ALL GET STOPPED; ALL STUCK IN THE HAIRS???

IT WOULD BE SO FUNNY IF THAT WOULD HAPPEN UP THERE.
WHEN THEY WENT TO TEACH SCHOOL, ALL THE CHILDREN WOULD STARE!

MY GRANDPA ONCE GREW A BIG ONE…IN THE MIDDLE OF HIS FACE.
GRANDMA SAID “SHAVE IT!”.  THERE IS NOW NOT A TRACE…

OF MUSTACHE ON HIS LIP ANY MORE…
BECAUSE IF HE HAD KEPT IT, GRANDMA WOULD HAVE SENT HIM RUNNING OUT THE DOOR.

WHEN I GROW OLD, I’LL GROW A MUSTACHE WITH LOTS OF HAIR.
IT WILL BE SO HUGE, YOU’LL SEE BIRDS PERCHING UP THERE!

MAYBE I WILL START TOMORROW; IT WILL GROW REAL SLOW…
AND WHEN I TURN SEVEN, IT WILL START TO SHOW.

TOPIC #9 ELECTRICITY

ELECTRICITY

I reached for the door knob one crisp winter day
and was ZAPPED by a bolt that knocked me away!

The pain in my hand was caused by some light!
It gave me some fear, it gave me some fright!

I pondered, I wondered “What could it be?”
“What was this power that chose to ZAP me?”

I reached out again in trembling fear.
I moved my elbow close… ‘till it was very near.

The door knob which was the cause of my pain…
Just sat there doing nothing… it boggled my brain!

Just then my big brother came walking right by.
I told him what happened; asked him to try.

He lowered his head, approached with his ear
ZAP! went the door knob. I gave a BIG CHEER!

He did…not…jump…back. He was still for a while.
I thought he had died! … ‘till he gave a big smile.

He chuckled and stood, with a glint in his eye.
I hoped that my brother would tell me the “BIG WHY?”

Of this mystery that happened right there in the hall.
He is smart and he’ll know. He will tell me it…all .

My brother marched into the kitchen and there
He told me “THE SECRET” that would make anyone STARE

At the truth of what happened, the facts, and then…
He said I couldn’t ever write them down with a pen…

On paper so others could see…
The secret that old scientists call E…LEC…TRI…CI…TY.

"Don’t tell mom" he said “She’ll be afraid”.
"Don’t even tell your friends of…the… SECOND… GRADE”.

“Your teacher may know… You cannot be sure”,
“But they can’t tell either”… “THIS…KNOWLEDGE…IS…PURE”

“If you sit down here carefully, I will tell you about the”...
“J O L T S”

“The door knob was shooting something called"…
“V O L T S”

“VOLTS come in a package of tiny and small”
“E-LEC-TRONS”

“Which are never… seen… at… all”…

“Until they are launched by a gun named”
“AMPS”

“It’s then that they fly… Please don’t tell gramps”.

"The light that you saw, we call that a"
“SPARK”

"But when shot with big AMPS, we call it an”
“ARC”.

(Pause)

"So now you know what caused you to fear.
I have told you the secret…but be
CERTAINLY CLEAR…"

"Not to tell anyone, not even your friends…
Because if they miss-use it… They will
COME…TO…BAD…ENDS"

TOPIC #22 Barnacle Bill the Sailor

Barnacle Bill the Sailor

Barnacle Bill lived up on the hill,
His house was hard to see.
He told us the tales of adventure and lore,
Of when he lived on the sea.

(refrain)
Barnacle Bill, Barnacle Bill, He sailed the ocean blue
His beard was so long; you’d think it was wrong.
His blue eyes were so clear, they would give you some fear
But the stories he tells are all true.

He kept his lawn trimmed all pretty and straight.
He said he had it done by a goat.
We heard the stories that came from his past.
He said he never needed a boat.

He would eat sea critters for breakfast,
And have sea horses for lunch.
He said that eels for dinner made him feel thinner
And some clams for desert would go crunch.

He looked down at the bay where children all play.
It brought back fond memories of old
When his life on the sea was all that he knew,
Where he had to stay brave and be bold.

He once rode a whale from Spain to Brazil.
The trip sure gave him a thrill.
But the time he herded penguins across the South Pole
Made him shiver and gave him a chill.

We see him from time to time when he goes shopping for a while.
He causes a stir when he visits the town.
But one thing’s for sure He always wears a big smile,
And is never ever seen with a frown.

While digging a ditch, the story is told
He became famous while living down under,
Of how he struck it rich while digging up gold
And dolphins carried him home with his plunder.

Some wonder why he stayed alone and never married at all.
The answers are secret and very well hid.
They say that’s why he built a big wall.
But the truth is surely known by this kid.

He used seagulls to send messages that would be carried afar.
One day he sent her a note in which love did abound
The gull was last seen approaching a star.
Perhaps the note is still...flying...around.

TOPIC #21 PAWS

PAWS

It was little when they got it. I was only three.
It grew much faster than I did… as…tall…as…a…tree!

The first time I remember; It went on the floor.
Mom wiped up the mess, and it was promptly sent out the door.

We played in the yard. I taught it all that I know.
It would chase balls…every one I would throw.

Sometimes we’d come in after playing all day…
Have some good food, then it would find a way

To lay on the floor in a circle of fir;
Stay a long time and never would stir.

I noticed one day, after I had turned four;
It would now wake up, and head for the door.

Its duty done, it would come in for a treat.
What amazed me that day, was the size…of…its…FEET!

I had never seen a dog, or even a cat
That had four furry feet as…BIG AS THAT!

My mom said “Those…are…called…PAWS”.
All I knew was – they…came…with…sharp…claws.

One day I taught it how to so “SHAKE!”.
PAWS reached up and scratched me… It felt like a rake!

About the time I turned five
I thought it was strange that PAWS was still so alive.

PAWS never held still. When awake, PAWS was sniffing around.
Except when asleep, PAWS would check…ev-er-y sound.

Our favorite place to hunt and explore
Was in our back woods, just out the side door.

We’d go on a hunting adventure, and look for a moose.
We never saw one, but once frightened a goose.

She was walking in the creek, with seven babies in tow.
We both just stared at them, all in a row.

We raced to the water to see them up close.
The goose then did something very scary and gross.

She made herself giant, with wings in the air
And then let out a huge noise that was surely a scare!

We were both so startled, we started to dance
And ran back home; I almost wet in my pants.

So, if you are in the woods with your favorite dog
And see something new, don’t let your brain fog

And rush into adventure, without having thought
About what might happen when you carry out your plot.

That lesson learned, we went in for some help.
I told mom about the goose’s big yelp.

She let me finish the story I told all-in-one-breath;
Of how we were certainly almost half-way-to-death.

The story was finished, the excitement calmed down
When I noticed that mom had a BIG FROWN.

She pointed to the mud that made a mess on the floor
Then, using “THE VOICE” said “Get-right-out-that-door!”

We obeyed and went out, sat down on the lawn.
Then we both laid down………. and each had a big yawn.

Topic #35 Princess Ellery

Princess Ellery

Princess Ellery snored on the plane.
It wasn't her fault. SHE WASN'T TO BLAME.

Her adventures had tuckered her out.
The giraffes would surely make you SHOUT!

The tiredness made her fall quickly asleep.
And her marvelous dreams, she wanted to keep...

And write them so you wouldn't get bored.
So now you know
why...she...
snored.

Topic inspired by 7 year old Ellery who gave me the honor of sitting next to her (27F) from ORD to SLC, flight AA2642 on 30 Sept, 2016.
PS I must confess...She slept like a princess and did not snore at all.

Topic #34 FOOTBALL

FOOTBALL

In football, they use a ball
That is pointed at both ends.
That sounds DANGEREOUS...
NEVER POINT IT AT YOUR FRIENDS.

It starts each game
Sitting on the ground.
They put helmets on,
And gather all around.

They say some numbers,
Then throw it in the air.
The players start bumping,
And the fans all stare...

To see who catches it
And then they all yell.
Some people are happy,
Others are not so swell.

They put in on the ground again;
Plan how to GET IT DONE.
The ball is passed to Someone BIG
And he begins to run.

He crashes into someone BIGGER
And tumbles to the ground.
All the players pile on top of him
And the ball is looking...to...be...found.

It is uncovered and they look
To see if it's still OK.
They see it's all right and quickly pass it along.
The ball is then again ready for play.

The same things happen again.
It goes on, and on, and on.
The only soft part of the football game
Is that they get to play it on a lawn.

pause

I think football is fun to watch, but
I don't want to play...at...all.
It would be way too rough for me
because
I'm a Professional Ping-Pong Ball.
